70 Wild Miles

6th. June 1998

For personal reasons, the organisers decided to focus their efforts entirely on the Cancer Research Campaign. All the money raised this year which totalled £22,500 was gratefully received by them and, much to the surprise of all concerned, was rewarded by the event being awarded the Campaigns Lillian Board Award for “outstanding fundraising through a sporting endeavour.” (Their words, not mine!) To my mind the most outstanding part of it was that the four reprobates who made their way to London to receive the award actually made it there and back without being arrested! See the Trophy page for photographic evidence.
Matthew Tyler won the men's event and Sally McCartney was the fastest woman. To nobodys surprise Jimmy Smith once again came top of the money raising league, but what was a surprise was the amount - £6280! this amounting to almost 28% of the overall total by himself.
